What is a doula?

Doula comes from the Greek word meaning "woman servant."  In the modern sense, a doula is a person who is trained to provide emotional, physical, and informational support during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

What are the benefits of having a doula?

A recent Cochrane Database review concludes, "Continuous support during labour has clinically meaningful benefits for women and infants and no known harm. All women should have support throughout labour and birth." Benefits of having a doula include being more likely to have a spontaneous labor and birth, greater satisfaction with the birth experience, and a lower incidence of cesarean surgery, instrumental delivery, low Apgar scores at five minutes, and epidural use.
